There Are No Words To Express The Extraordinary Strength And Character Of This Breed Of People We Call American. They Are The Kind Of Men And Women Tom Paine Had In Mind When He Wrote, During The Darkest Days Of The American Revolution, We Have It In Our Power To Begin The World Over Again.

It Should Be The Right Of The Individual To Decide Whether He Wants To Belong To A Union.

I Have Flown Twice Over Mount St. Helens Out On Our West Coast. I'm Not A Scientist And I Don't Know The Figures, But I Have A Suspicion That That One Little Mountain Has Probably Released More Sulfur Dioxide Into The Atmosphere Of The World Than Has Been Released In The Last Ten Years Of Automobile Driving Or Things Of That Kind That People Are So Concerned About.

Fellow Americans, Our Duty Is Before Us Tonight. Let Us Go Forward, Determined To Serve Selflessly A Vision Of Man With God, Government For People, And Humanity At Peace. For It Is Now Our Task To Tend And Preserve, Through The Darkest And Coldest Nights, That "sacred Fire Of Liberty" That President Washington Spoke Of Two Centuries Ago, A Fire That Tonight Remains A Beacon To All Oppressed Of The World, Shining Forth From This Kindly, Pleasant, Greening Land We Call America.

If We Look To The Answer As To Why For So Many Years We Achieved So Much, Prospered As No Other People On Earth, It Was Because Here In This Land We Unleashed The Energy And Individual Genius Of Man To A Greater Extent Than Has Ever Been Done Before. Freedom And The Dignity Of The Individual Have Been More Available And Assured Here Than In Any Other Place On Earth. The Price For This Freedom At Times Has Been High, But We Have Never Been Unwilling To Pay That Price.
