The Surest Way To Know Our Gold, Is To Look Upon It And Examine It In God's Furnace, Where He Tries It That We May See What It Is. If We Have A Mind To Know Whether A Building Stands Strong Or Not, We Must Look Upon It When The Wind Blows. If We Would Know Whether A Staff Be Strong, Or A Rotten, Broken Reed, We Must Observe It When It Is Leaned On And Weight Is Borne Upon It. If We Would Weigh Ourselves Justly We Must Weigh Ourselves In God's Scales That He Makes Use Of To Weigh Us.

Surely There Is Something In The Unruffled Calm Of Nature That Overawes Our Little Anxieties And Doubts; The Sight Of The Deep-blue Sky And The Clustering Stars Above Seems To Impart A Quiet To The Mind.

But It Is Doubtless True, And Evident From [the] Scriptures, That The Essence Of All True Religion Lies In Holy Love; And That In This Divine Affection, And An Habitual Disposition To It, And That Light Which Is The Foundation Of It, And Those Things Which Are The Fruits Of It, Consists The Whole Of Religion.

Resolved, Never To Count That A Prayer, Nor To Let That Pass As A Prayer, Nor That As A Petition Of A Prayer, Which Is So Made, That I Cannot Hope That God Will Answer It; Nor That As A Confession, Which I Cannot Hope God Will Accept.
