There Is A Great Difference, Whether The Poet Seeks The Particular For The Sake Of The General Or Sees The General In The Particular. From The Former Procedure There Ensues Allegory, In Which The Particular Serves Only As Illustration, As Example Of The General. The Latter Procedure, However, Is Genuinely The Nature Of Poetry; It Expresses Something Particular, Without Thinking Of The General Or Pointing To It.

Truth Is Contrary To Our Nature, Not So Error, And This For A Very Simple Reason: Truth Demands That We Should Recognize Ourselves As Limited, Error Flatters Us That, In One Way Or Another, We Are Unlimited.

Pain And Pleasure, Good And Evil, Come To Us From Unexpected Sources. It Is Not There Where We Have Gathered Up Our Brightest Hopes, That The Dawn Of Happiness Breaks. It Is Not There Where We Have Glanced Our Eye With Affright, That We Find The Deadliest Gloom. What Should This Teach Us? To Bow To The Great And Only Source Of Light, And Live Humbly And With Confiding Resignation.

Let Us Seek To Fathom Those Things That Are Fathomable And Reserve Those Things Which Are Unfathomable For Reverence In Quietude.
